Three new wide releases enter the box office fray, but none looks strong enough to derail the 3D epic Avatar [HWAVA] in its sixth weekend. The sci-fi adventure continues to transfix moviegoers and should be able to attain another $30 million this weekend. That would be enough for Avatar to top The Dark Knight’s $533 million to become the second biggest domestic earner of all times.
The Book of Eli [BOELI] connected with audiences last week despite the presence of Avatar. With the typical 50% drop, the R-rated actioner should earn around $16 million.
Angels are the new demons in the R-rated thriller Legion [LEGIN] starring Paul Bettany [PBETT], Tyrese Gibson [TYGIB] and Dennis Quaid [DQUAI]. Sony Screen Gems has a solid track record marketing genre films as seen with the Resident Evil and Underworld series. Descending upon 2476 locations, Legion could gross about $16 million.
Dwayne Johnson [TROCK] wear tights once again, but unfortunately not the wrestling variety wanted by his older fans. If The Tooth Fairy [TOFRY] looks like the dumbest high concept idea for a comedy since The Love Guru, then the PG-rated comedy is not for you. Targeted strictly for families with young children, whom haven’t had anything new since Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, The Tooth Fairy may locate $15 million from 3344 theaters.
Indiana Jones and Rick O’Connell team up for the modern medical drama Extraordinary Measures [XMEAS]. The first release from CBS Films look and feel like it belongs on the small screen. Though Harrison Ford [HFORD] and Brendan Fraser [BFRAS] lend their starpower, moviegoers prefer to see them in action fares. Debuting in 2549 theaters, Extraordinary Measures could uncover $9 million.
